BMW ALPINA B5 BITURBO

Chassis & Suspension

The ALPINA driving experience is unique - perhaps best characterised by effortlessness and powerful confidence. The intelligent suspension and chassis set-up plays a pivotal role in this by allowing high, perceptible comfort combined with outstanding driving dynamics and neutral handling. This is the oft-cited driving comfort ‘made by‘ ALPINA.

By means of in-depth development work, ALPINA engineers have revised the suspension to match the high power output of the 4.4 litre V8 Bi-Turbo in order to deliver pronounced driving dynamics, over and above those of the predecessor, while maintaining first-class ride comfort.

Adaptive dampers in combination with shorter and stiffer springs increase lateral dynamics while simultaneously allowing a pronounced range of adjustment. Using the Driving Experience Control switch, the electronically adjustable dampers are regulated in both compression and rebound, offering maximum dynamic performance in Sport+ Mode or all-out ride comfort for gentle cruising in the ALPINA specific Comfort+ Mode. The Touring variant of the new BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo has a rear-axle air suspension which ensures a neutral ride height and balanced handling characteristics regardless of loads.

Dynamic

In combination with new ALPINA CLASSIC 20“ forged wheels, Pirelli Ultra-High-Performance tyres provide excellent handling in any driving situation.

Tires from Pirelli were last fitted to a BMW ALPINA in 1985, but their engineers convinced ALPINA to rekindle the cooperation more than thirty years later. The new BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo comes equipped with super high performance tires measuring 255/35 ZR20 at the front and 295/30 ZR20 (Touring: 285/30 ZR20) at the rear*. These “ALP” labelled Pirelli P Zero tires were explicitly developed for use on the new BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo and in accordance to ALPINA’s requirements with regards to dynamics and comfort. Combining motorsport technology with a flat shoulder contour and an innovative tread pattern facilitates high lateral loads and precise steering feeling without compromising wet handling.

Integral Active Steering

For the first time, the new BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo features Integral Active Steering which in conjunction with the high-performance drivetrain and the all-wheel drive system offers a dynamic driving experience par excellence. The Integral Active Steering combines a variable ratio electric steering system at the front axle with active steering on the rear axle whereby the wheels can turn a maximum of 2.5 degrees. Specially attuned to the ALPINA suspension and Pirelli performance tyres the rear axle steers opposed to the front axle at low speeds for increased agility and dynamic handling, while steering with the front axle at higher speeds for maximum high-speed directional stability.

Safety

A BMW ALPINA offers a high degree of comfort and sportiness as well as neutral handling, which ensures stability and a high-degree of safety even when driving at higher speeds.

The electronic driving stability control systems are specifically configured for each specific BMW ALPINA model, taking into account a plethora of influencing parameters, in order to ensure that the high power and torque are transferred to the road safely and effectively.

The influence of the aerodynamic properties of a vehicle on driving stability is of particular importance, especially at higher speeds. Based on the principle ‘Form Follows Function‘, the aerodynamic components such as the front and rear spoilers are specifically designed to work together in order to achieve the maximum possible reduction in lift and thus ensure very neutral handling.

High performance brakes

The brake system has the task of decelerating the vehicle safely and comfortably from high speeds. Generously dimensioned with maximum utilisation of the brake surface and equipped with excellent ventilation, the brake system in the new BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo provides outstanding deceleration performance. Four-piston fixed brake callipers and 395 mm discs on the front axle and floating brake callipers with 398 mm discs on the rear axle ensure high performance and enduring stability. The brake callipers are painted in ALPINA Blue and carry an ALPINA lettering on the front axle.

Specially sportive drivers can choose an optional brake system at additional costs, which combines light-weight drilled composite discs with high performance brake pads for even more fading resistance under very demanding thermodynamics loads.

New test procedure WLTP

Stated fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are measured pursuant to EU Regulation 715/2007 in its applicable version. From 1st of September 2018 the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) has replaced the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Regardless of the applied test procedure, it is currently still mandatory to state fuel consumption and CO2 emissions according to NEDC, hence stated values are determined based on the WLTP test procedure and are converted to NEDC for comparison purposes. Depending on your country, vehicle related taxes or other duties may be based on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions data which differs from that stated here. The provision of additional fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as determined according to WLTP is currently voluntary until their provision becomes mandatory by law.

Further information on specific fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of new passenger cars is provided by the ‚Leitfaden über den Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2-Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer Personenkraftwagen‘ which can be obtained free of charge at all points of sale and from the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT) or online https://www.dat.de/co2/.
